Mimosa has introduced a personal protective equipment (PPE) mascot named Sheldon the Kamba, created to promote responsible behaviour and highlight the critical importance of wearing PPE in the workplace.
Sheldon is inspired by the tortoise, a creature universally known for its slow movement, caution, and resilience. With its long lifespan and sturdy shell, the tortoise symbolizes longevity and protection. Sheldon’s name cleverly represents the protective shell of PPE, encouraging everyone to wear their safety gear consistently.
The word “shell” often recalls a hard, durable outer covering that shields living organisms. For a tortoise, its primary defence against danger is to withdraw safely into its shell, its natural exoskeleton. While Sheldon’s shell might be heavy and sometimes uncomfortable, it serves as a vital shield, much like all PPE.
The “don” in Sheldon’s name reinforces the action of putting on PPE. Derived from the verb “to don,” meaning to wear, the name Sheldon combines “shell” and “don” to remind workers to actively wear their protective equipment as a key step in safeguarding themselves on the job.

Sheldon’s Safety Reminders:
- PPE is the last line of defence between a worker and potential accidents.
- PPE acts as every worker’s exoskeleton.
- Protective equipment “shells” the wearer from imminent hazards.
- Safety and health must never be compromised for comfort.
- The only way PPE can protect you is if you wear it.
Whenever you see or hear the name Sheldon the Kamba – “The People’s Protector”, remember the call to action prioritize your safety by always donning the appropriate PPE.
